Oyster Festival Committee
This year, 2004, is the 50th anniversary of the Clarinbridge Oyster festival. Many things have changed since the first festival in 1954 when thirty four people attended, but the essence of the festival is very much the same. What makes the Oyster festival unique is the fact that a small village festival has developed and grown into an international event of global standing. The festival usually takes place on the first weekend in September. The traditional opening of the festival takes place in the festival marquee beside Paddy Burke’s on the Friday evening with a big band night. On Saturday, the Oyster Gala celebration is the main event of the weekend. This takes place during the afternoon in the festival marquee on the banks of the Clarin river. Participants enjoy the best of food, refreshments and entertainment, and later that night patrons enjoy the Saturday Night party. Finally, there is the Sunday Jamboree which is a family focused event in the marquee. A brochure in respect of the festival is launched in May.
